The Sudoku Packing Method: How to Pack Less and Wear More

I was scrolling Pinterest the other day and came across the Sudoku Packing Method and then I saw it on Instagram too so you know I had to share it. I am obsessed! If you haven't played Sudoku, it is a number puzzle where you fill a 9x9 grid so that every row, column, and box contains the numbers 1 through 9 with no repeats. Every number has a place and everything works together. It is so addicting. This method works exactly the same way. Every piece has a purpose, everything connects, and nothing is wasted. The whole idea is that every piece is meant to mix and match so you can make a surprising number of outfits using only 9 pieces.

Here's how to build your 9 outfits only using 3 bottoms, 3 tops, and 3 layering pieces.

Pick 3 Bottoms
For example, jeans, white jeans, and wide leg pants. These are your foundation. Everything else builds around them.

Pick 3 Tops
For example, a t-shirt, a striped t-shirt, and a tank top. Pick ones that mix and match with all 3 bottoms.

Pick 3 Layering Pieces
For example, a crew neck sweater, a button down, and a cardigan. Three totally different vibes that can completely change the feel of any outfit.

Now Here's Where the Magic Happens
Lay your pieces out on the bed like a grid. Every row is different.

Row 1: top, bottom, layer (t-shirt, jeans, sweater)
Row 2: bottom, layer, top (white jeans, button down, striped t-shirt)
Row 3: layer, top, bottom (cardigan, tank top, wide leg pants)

Now go across horizontally. Row 1 is your first outfit — t-shirt, jeans, sweater. Row 2 is your second outfit — white jeans, button down, striped t-shirt. Row 3 is your third outfit — cardigan, tank top, wide leg pants. That's 3 outfits just going across.

Now look vertically down each column. Column 1 gives you t-shirt, white jeans, cardigan. Column 2 gives you jeans, button down, tank top. Column 3 gives you sweater, striped t-shirt, wide leg pants. Three more outfits just by looking at it a different way.

Bonus Outfits!
Look at the example layout. The t-shirt is placed in the top left corner — it's in Row 1 with the jeans, and the button down is right under the jeans. So if you look in an L-shape, you'll find even more outfit combinations hiding in your corners. The t-shirt, jeans, and button down? That's a whole new outfit you didn't even put in a row. Try it with every corner and you'll keep finding more.

I want you to try this! Grab 3 tops, 3 bottoms, and 3 layers, lay them out just like I showed you, and I promise you are going to be amazed at how many outfits you can make. Let me know what you think — I would love to hear how it goes for you!

Stop in and we'll help you build your Sudoku travel capsule. We'll pull the pieces, check the grid together, and send you off feeling ready for wherever you're headed.
